A Brief History of Darjeeling

The word ‘Dorje’ means ‘lightning’. This land full of peace and natural resources is called Darjeeling, the ‘land of lightning’ or βLand of the Thunderboltβ. Darjeeling was formerly part of Sikkim. The Maharaja of Sikkim launched one attack after another against the Gorkhas.
Then the British intervened in the matter and prevented the Gorkhas from becoming a part of Nepal as a whole of Sikkim. During this time English Captain George W. Aylmer Lloyd visited Darjeeling. He realized the importance of the place and designated it as a summer residence for English officers working in India.
No significant development took place until the British Governor General of India, Lord William Benting, opened the way for negotiations with the King of Sikkim. William Benting offered to hand over Darjeeling in exchange for money or land. The Maharaja of Sikkim accepted the terms on the condition that the British return the Kumya chief.
He was a former Sikkimese agent who cheated Sikkim and took refuge with the British. The British government rejected this proposal and refrained from any discussion on Darjeeling. Capt. Lloyd realizing this situation changed the information of the letter from His Majesty and sent a grant of deed to the Company agreeing to hand over Darjeeling to the Company unconditionally and as a token of friendship. Thus Darjeeling was fraudulently occupied by the British Company.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway ( DHR)
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a remarkable creation of the British. In 1999, this toy train of Darjeeling was given the title of world heritage. Darjeeling station is just 5 km from Hotel Elgin.
Darjeeling tea
The story of the world-famous Darjeeling tea goes without saying. This resulted from experiments by a British surgeon, Dr. Arthur Campbell. who brought some tea bridges from China and planted them in his garden. It is the combined result of mountains, sun, rain and soil, the altitude at which it grows. The world-famous Darjeeling tea is produced only in the climate of Darjeeling
Conclusion
The Elgin Darjeeling stands as a testament to luxury and history, with its roots tracing back 125 years as the former summer residence of the Maharaja of Cooch Behar. Perched at 6000 feet above sea level in the heart of Darjeeling, this hotel offers a unique blend of British colonial charm and modern amenities, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking an unforgettable experience in the Himalayas.
