3 Days in Rangaroon: A Perfect North Bengal Getaway

Located at about 1700 m above sea level to the east of Darjeeling town, Rangaroon was originally a picnic spot. From here, one can see a magnificent view of Kanchenjunga. A part of Darjeeling town and Observatory Hill can be seen. Also, one can see the view of South and West Sikkim.

History behind Rangaroon

‘Rajeru‘ or ‘Rangarun‘ is a small hill village in Darjeeling district. In 1776, Governor General Lord Asile Addon established a tea garden and factory here. The settlement developed around this tea garden. Many locals called this place Rangerun, which became known as Ranga-roon.

How to Reach Rangaroon?

The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri and the airport is Bagdogra. So to reach Rangarun, you must come to these two railway stations or Bagdogra airport. You can get a shared car from New Jalpaiguri to go to Kurseong. Then from Kurseong, you can get a shared car to go to Rangarun. You can also rent a car directly from New Jalpaiguri.

Homestay Rangaroon

Beautiful homestays are arranged on the slopes of the mountains. At the entrance of the Khaling Homestay, it is written ‘Come as Guest Leave as Family‘. There are many types of trees inside, such as succulent cactus, etc. There are cottages here. There is also a large room where four people can easily stay, and if you go up the stairs, there are two rooms and a place to chat.

The window shows the tea garden, green mountains, clouds, and nature all around. The entire cottage is decorated with various pictures. There is a fireplace in the cottage. In the Lepcha language, ‘Rangerune‘ means the ‘bend of the river‘. The mountain river bends along the slopes of this mountain, hence the name of this township, Rangaroon.

In the middle of the road, you will see the Rangroon Tea Garden factory. This tea factory built during the British era is now dilapidated. Now the tea leaves are taken from the garden and sent to another factory for processing.

At one time, the tea of ​​this tea garden was appreciated by Buckingham Palace. Below the factory, you can see the tea garden through which the path winds down to the river.
